Nursery of investigation

A large part of the experiments in genetic resources held in the nursery, or at least, they start in the nursery, with production of plants designed to tests in field or in collections. Much of the production is done by planting in packs. In greenhouses it is done acclimatization and cultivation of plants from the in vitro culture laboratory, propagation by techniques of semi herbaceous cloning, germination and seed cropping for testing progenies and origins, as well as tests of resistance to diseases.

The facilities consist of:

  • Greenhouse 1: It has got an area of 130 m2 with a gabled roof covered with glass, temperature controlled by a “cooling system” and heating system by hot water. 6 microtunnels with “fog system” that allow humidity close to 100%, so we can acclimatize plants from micropropagation from the in vitro culture laboratory and perform semi herbaceous cloning. It also has a system of “mist” with fertilization dosage for subsequent cultivation of plants
  • Greenhose 2: Greenhouse of 600 m2 that has four independent rooms, with regulated temperature “cooling” and thermal screen. Two of the rooms have got tables for farming, with subirrigation systems and “mist”, that allow the control of a water and nutritional independet regime, allowing to establish a maximum of 8 different treatments of fertirrigation. It was built in the year 2001 with funds ‘EAGGF’ for then plan ‘Plan de Mellora Xenética de Galicia’; in the year 2013 improvements have been made.
  • Greenhouse made of PVC of double arch with 800 m2 for growing plants once the stage of germination, rooting or acclimatization has passed.
  • Laboratory room with image analyzer for roots, precision scales and drying ovens for analysis of dry matter.
