FOLLOW-UP OF THE IMPROVEMENT PROJECT OF THE GALICIAN OAK

Representatives of Juana de Vega Foundation, Lourizán Forestry Research Centre and Viveros Costa de Lóngaras (Tree nursery firm) met in Abadín (Lugo) in order to evaluate the development of the project “Implementation of selected and improved stands of oak—Quercus robur— on land property of the Galician Autonomous Community”. The meeting took place on November 8th in the facilites of the tree nursery, which is collaborating in the project with Rías Baixas Forestry Centre (Vilaboa, Pontevedra).
This project is intended to promote the value and improvement of the species, as well as to promove the use and harnessing of the oak in our community through the increase of certified plants. The initiative was translated into a collaboration agreement between the Galician Ministry of Rural Affairs and Juana de Vega Foundation on March 2015 over a 2015-2018 period.
During these months, the plant will be pulled up, which is being cultivated through bare root in the tree nurseries in order to place it in final plots of public ownership. One of the objectives pursued is to maintain the diversity of Quercus robur in Galicia by creating plantations with greater diversity and gathering genetic materials from different geographical origins within the same climatic zone. The improvement of the forest characteristics of the oak (growth, wood quality and resistance) is pursued in this project and also the incentive, through the creation of a private offer by tree nurseries from the community, of the formation of plant material which allows to plant these trees on private land or in public interventions in urban and peri-urban parks and gardens.
