GALICIAN MINISTRY OF RURAL AFFAIRS RENEWS THE COOPERATION WITH INDITEX IN ORDER TO CONTINUE SUPPORTING THE RESEARCHES OF LOURIZÁN FORESTRY RESEARCH CENTRE

Ángeles Vázquez, the Galician minister of Rural Affairs, and Antonio Abril, the general secretary of Inditex, have signed a cooperation agreement for the development of the Plan de Mellora e Innovación Forestal de Galicia (improvement plan for forestry in Galicia) on December 1st. Under this agreement, Inditex is committed to donate 600,000 euros in 3 years (2018-2020 period) in order to continue the cooperation with the Xunta in terms of forestry development.
The past compromises (2007, 2010 and 2014) are continued with this agreement to develop the projects of creation of high-genetic-value forest biomass areas and genetic improvement of the main forestry species in Galicia.
Thus, this document will allow continuing to support the development of programs aimed at forestry ecosystems, genetic improvement, silvicultural improvement and forest protection of the plan, which promotes Rural Affairs. In addition, the funds will finance the provision of pre-doctoral and post-doctoral researchers who are specialists in the planned activities, as well as the training of research personnel on issues related to the agreement.
The objective is to increase the direct and indirect benefits of our mounts; such as the obtainment of raw material, the protection and improvement of soil, the regulation of the water cycle, the conservation and improvement of biodiversity and the regulation and exchange of atmospheric gases—particularly as carbon sewers and biomass providers for the energy generation with a zero CO2 balance. This is the biggest positive contribution to the fight against climate change.
