LOURIZÁN CONFIRMS THE POTENTIAL OF PINE RESINATION IN GALICIA

Item published in Campo Galego on 04/26/2017. The forestry research centre develops trials in mountain communities from Caldas de Reis (Pontevedra) and Maceda (Ourense). It works with the classical system of bark chop and borehole, which consists in ...

The Galician pine forests can find in the resin a complementary harnessing of the wood. There are already mountain communities which are making tests for its extraction, not only for the economic value they can obtain from the raw material, but for the management of the forest that the resin carries with it. If there are people working in the pine forest in summer, it is less likely to start forest fires.

Last year, the centre began to evaluate the most suitable forms of extraction for the community. The trials began in 2016 in a pine forest from the mountain community of San Clemente, in Caldas de Reis (Pontevedra). This year is also extended to Maceda (Ourense) with the collaboration of the mountain community from Foncuberta (Medo).

The directir of Lourizán Forestry Research Centre, Enrique Martínez Chamorro, believes that the first positive conclusions of the year of trials in Caldas can already be drawn. “We can confirm in Caldas that the production volumes of pine resin which were expected in the experiences from the 60s and 70s in Galicia can be achieved." He highlights.
