During the 14th and 15th June, the “Proactive Management of Forest Fuels” Workshop was held at the CIF Lourizán. The goal was the decreasing of forest fires severity.

Lourizán, 16 June 2016.- This event made known the results obtained from the last investigations in this area that are being carried out by several Spanish research teams. At the same time, it was useful to share forest managers’ experiences within this sector. In this meeting, new forest fuels prototypes were presented. These fuels were developed by researchers from the CIF of the Consellería de Medio Rural (that is, the Forestry Research Centre of the Galician Rural Environment Department) as well as from the Lugo Technical School of the University of Santiago de Compostela. These prototypes are a step forward within the current situation and they are expected to help the improvement of fuel management. They are also expected to encourage technical decisions related to firefighting.

This workshop has gathered a large group of forestry technicians and researchers at the national level. Ricardo Vélez, from the Spanish society for forestry sciences “Sociedad Española de Ciencias Forestales,” drew the conclusions of the workshop. The Director-General of the Dirección Xeral de Ordenación e Produción Forestal (that is, the Galician “Forest Management and Production Department”), Tomás Fernández-Couto, was in charge of the closing ceremony. Fernández-Couto stressed the importance of this meetings to the improvement of forests management.

The workshop was organized by the CIF, with the support of the INGACAL (the Galician Food-Quality Institute), the INIA (the Spanish National Institute for Agricultural and Food Research and Technology) and the GAIN (the Galician Agency for Innovation).
