Summary:
The participation of the Lourizán Forestry Research Centre (CIF de Lourizán) in the BioNogueira project, developed in the Municipality of Nogueira de Ramuín, constitutes an applied research initiative with a strong territorial focus and a commitment to the conservation of the chestnut tree's genetic heritage. The project encompasses activities that combine varietal identification, vegetative propagation, phytosanitary assessment, and the establishment of a new experimental plantation with both local and selected commercial varieties.
The project is driven by the presence of high-value chestnut groves in the area, institutional interest in revitalizing the rural economy, and the availability of land for new plantations. Activities carried out include the molecular identification of old, apparently grafted chestnut trees; the genetic identification of varieties using microsatellites; the selection of rootstocks resistant to ink disease; the collection of scions and grafting of identified varieties; and the design and implementation of the pilot plantation, along with monitoring and maintenance of the grafts.
This project not only seeks to conserve and enhance local biodiversity but also aims to create a replicable model for other Galician municipalities with traditional chestnut groves, contributing to the conservation of native varieties and the development of new sustainable economic opportunities.
Objectives:
- Conserve and enhance the local genetic heritage of chestnut trees, identifying and reproducing traditional varieties through molecular techniques.
- Establish an experimental plantation with selected native and commercial varieties, combined with rootstocks tolerant to ink disease.
- Demonstrate the viability of a replicable methodology for the restoration and valorization of traditional chestnut groves in Galicia.
- Generate technical knowledge on varietal performance, adaptability, and vegetative propagation techniques for future restoration actions.
- Promote institutional cooperation and knowledge transfer between the CIF de Lourizán, the municipality, and other local stakeholders and forestry nursery professionals.
