Summary: Since the late 1980s, the Lourizán Forest Research Center has maintained a genetic improvement program for pine in the country. Currently, data on growth, shape, wood properties, and resistance to the pine wood nematode are available for most progenies in the program. Now is the time to advance and select trees for the next generation of improvement. To select those of greatest interest to the industry, and therefore to the sector, this action involves collaboration with Finsa to determine the most relevant traits for selecting the new generation. Additionally, as their personnel are often in the forest buying wood, their collaboration will be used to select native pines candidates for resistance to red and brown bands. This cooperation action will allow for progress in the pine improvement program in Galicia, which will impact the Galician forestry sector, as in the future, it will be possible to have new seed orchards or family parents with greater genetic gain.
