Summary: The main objective of the cooperation action is to perform genotyping, using state-of-the-art Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) techniques, of traditional chestnut varieties in the forests managed by the Joint Forest Management Associations (AFXC). The purpose of the project is to revalue the established stands of native deciduous chestnut trees, identifying the varieties grown in the forests of Tuxe, Cambela, and Parada del Sil, defining synonyms and the relationships among varieties, as well as understanding the diversity and genetic structure of our chestnut groves.
With this project, in addition to recovering our traditional chestnut varieties, which form the basis of our botanical heritage, the goal is to create value and differentiate the productions. From a practical viewpoint, with the genetic information obtained from the chestnut groves, better management of them will be possible as it will reveal which genotypes are most interesting for the production of chestnuts and their derivatives.
