NEW ORCHARDS OF PINUS PINASTER SEED. ADVANCES IN GENETIC IMPROVEMENT

Two news orchards of seed were included in 2016 in the Rexistro Galego de Materiais de Base (Official Galician Journal, nº 6 from January 12, 2016) and in the Catálogo Nacional de Materiais de Base (Official State Gazette, nº 145 from June 16, 2016) for the production of controlled MFR (blue label). These are the orchards from Gomesende (Ourense) and from As Neves (Pontevedra). Both were planted in 1995 as progeny tests in the improvement program by Lourizán Research Forestry Centre. Data capture in the 7th and 15th year based on a set of progeny tests by this program and the analysis of these data allowed to make a genetic selection of the trees that should be in the new orchards. This was made selecting the best specimens from the best families according to a selection index based on a set of high importance characters in the wood production (volume growth, shaft straightness, internodes length, angle of branches insertion).
